Reference Manager Usage

Literasiana : Journal of Library Information Literacy and Education requires all authors to use reference management software when preparing their manuscripts. The use of reference managers ensures consistency, accuracy, and completeness of citations and bibliographies.

Recommended Reference Managers

Authors are encouraged to use one of the following reference management tools:

Required Citation Style

Literasiana uses the APA 7th Edition (American Psychological Association) style for all citations and references.

  • In-text citations: Author-date format (e.g., Smith, 2020)

  • Reference list: Alphabetical order by author's last name

  • DOI (Digital Object Identifier): Must be included for all references that have a DOI

How to Use Reference Managers

  3. Organize references into folders

  4. Insert citations using the Mendeley Cite plugin

  5. Generate bibliography automatically in APA 7th style

For Zotero Users:

  1. Install Zotero standalone and browser connector

  2. Save references directly from web pages and databases

  3. Organize collections and tags

  4. Use Zotero plugin for Word/Google Docs to insert citations

  5. Select APA 7th style from the style manager

For EndNote Users:

  1. Create an EndNote library

  2. Import references from online databases

  3. Use the "Cite While You Write" feature in Microsoft Word

  4. Choose APA 7th as the output style

Prohibited Practices

Citation stacking Citing multiple sources without relevance
Secondary citations Citing a source that was cited by another source (use primary source whenever possible)
Predatory journal references References from known predatory publishers are discouraged
Excessive self-citation More than 20% self-citations is considered unethical

Verification of References

The editorial team will:

  1. Verify all DOIs using https://doi.org

  2. Check the accuracy of author names, years, and titles

  3. Ensure all in-text citations appear in the reference list (and vice versa)

  4. Reject manuscripts with systematic reference errors

Author Checklist

Before submission, authors must confirm:

  • I have used a reference manager (Mendeley, Zotero, or EndNote)

  • All citations follow APA 7th edition style

  • Every in-text citation has a corresponding entry in the reference list

  • Every reference list entry is cited in the text

  • DOIs are included for all journal articles

  • I have downloaded and installed the APA 7th style in my reference manager

  • References are up-to-date (minimum 60% from last 5–10 years)

  • I have avoided predatory journal references
